Infrared
Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away and without digital there was a film known as Kodak High Speed Infrared 35mm Film. It was a transparency (slide) film and fiddly to use because of the deep, almost black, filter that needed to be used. But the results were spectacular. Sadly that film has passed into the realm of folklore and is no longer made. Sadly I did not use as much of this film as I perhaps should have (probably because of its price and specialized nature), but I did use it enough times to see its wonderful results. I managed to take location shots in Cornwall and the west coast of Scotland as well as a few in Highgate Cemetery in London. Which was all fun … and then I did no more ! So having seen articles on Infrared on YouTube it sparked my interest again. Thankfully there is a way of recreating some of the looks in digital. As well as certain makes of Black and White Infrared film that is still on the market.
The quick answer was to purchase a 'chipped' old digital camera that had been modified to see only the Infrared band width of light. Something that they were not designed to do and that human eyes cannot see. A converted camera is not too expensive as they are all old and mostly not used as technology has moved on. Yet it gives them a new lease of life as well as a fun view on the world around us. So gathered here are some old Kodak Infrared images mixed with some new digital Infrared pictures.
